1Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

2just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.
3It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
3With this in mind, since I myself have carefully looked into everything from the beginning, it seemed good to me also to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,
4That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
4so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.
5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
6And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
6Both of them were righteous in God's sight, living blamelessly according to all the Lord's commandments and decrees.
7And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was unable to conceive, and they were both well along in years.
8And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,

14And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,
15For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.
16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
16He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God.
17And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
17And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
18And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
18Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years."
19And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
19The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.
20And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
20And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time."
21And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.
22And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
22When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
23And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

24And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

25Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

26And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
36And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.
37For with God nothing shall be impossible.
37For no word from God will ever fail."
38And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
38"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me according to your word." Then the angel left her.
39And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
39At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,
40And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

48For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

50And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

11He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission.
33Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
33When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
34When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country.

9If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"
10And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath.
10On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,
11And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

12And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity.

33Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.

1Then said he unto the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe unto him, through whom they come!
1Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.
2It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.
2It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.
3Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
3So watch yourselves. If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.
4And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

13Then said the lord of the vineyard, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be they will reverence him when they see him.
13Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.'
14But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.
14But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. 'This is the heir,' they said. 'Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
15So they cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

2And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king."
3And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
